Auto Accidents

For Car Insurance Rates

There are several things to keep in mind if/when you have an accident. Obviously, the first thing to do is to make sure there are no injuries and call 911 if there are injuries.

1. Do not admit fault and do not argue. Let the Police and the insurance companies determine fault.

2. Write down the license plate number of anyone involved immediately. If someone flees the scene try to get as much information as quickly as you can - you must prove hit-and-run for insurance purposes - get names/phone numbers of witnesses if this happens.

3. Call the police so you can file a report - even if it appears that there is no damage, this could protect you if the other person(s) involved decided to file a claim.

4. Do not give your insurance information to the other driver(s) unless the police tell you - exchange names and phone numbers with all other parties, especially third party witnesses.

5. Using your cell phone take photos as quickly as possible of all vehicles involved. Try to get a few up close to "see" damages, and a few from a distance to show context.

6. Do not sign anything unless asked to do so by a police officer.

7. Call your Farm Bureau office to report the accident as soon as possible.
